Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the Northern District in 2021 compared to Christies Beach shows that there was a similar proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 88.4% of the population used English only, and 9.3% used a non-English language, compared with 88.2% and 7.0% respectively for Christies Beach.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the Northern District was Mandarin, with 1.1% of the population, or 438 people using this language at home.

There were no major differences between Northern District and Christies Beach in 2021.

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 1,079 or 39.3%, and the number of people who used English only decreased by 662 or 1.8%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the Northern District between 2006 and 2021 were for those using:
