In the City of Onkaparinga, 7% of people spoke a language other than English at home in 2016.

The City of Onkaparinga's language statistics show the proportion of the population who speak a language at home other than English. They indicate how culturally diverse a population is and the degree to which different ethnic groups and nationalities are retaining their language.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the City of Onkaparinga in 2016 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 88.3% of the population spoke English only, and 6.7% spoke a non-English language, compared with 75.4% and 19.7% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the City of Onkaparinga was Mandarin, with 0.5% of the population, or 818 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of the City of Onkaparinga and Greater Adelaide in 2016 were:

  • A smaller percentage speaking Italian at home (0.4% compared to 2.1%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Mandarin at home (0.5% compared to 2.1%)

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 1,473 or 15.3%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 2,542 or 1.8%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in the City of Onkaparinga between 2011 and 2016 were for those speaking:

  • Mandarin (+353 persons)
  • Malayalam (+154 persons)
  • Filipino/Tagalog (+148 persons)
  • Punjabi (+120 persons)
