Noarlunga Centre - Noarlunga Downs is bounded by Beach Road in the north, the Southern Expressway and the suburb of Huntfield Heights in the east, Main South Road in the south and the Onkaparinga River and Dyson Road in the west.

Name origin

Noarlunga Centre and Noarlunga Downs are thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "fishing place" or “the place with the hill”.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for grazing and farming, particularly wheat crops. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years, with rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s. Noarlunga Centre developed as the administrative, commercial and recreation centre for the former City of Noarlunga. The population increased from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, with the most rapid growth between 2006 and 2011.
