Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth took place in the 1920s and 1930s when the seaside area was opened up for holiday homes. Significant development occurred during the 1950s and 1960s. The population generally increased from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area.
