Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming. Some growth occurred during in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Significant growth took place in the post-war years. Rapid development occurred between the 1950s and 1970s, including public housing construction. The population declined slightly during the 1990s, was relatively stable between 2001 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011.
