Location and boundaries

Hills South District is bounded by the Onkaparinga River, Amery Road, Kays Road, Beltunga Road, Blewitt Springs Road, Douglas Gully Road, Clayton Road and McLaren Flat Road in the north, Toops Hill Road and Range Road in the east, Mount Terrible Road and the District Council of Yankalilla area in the south, and Main South Road, Hahn Road, Dabblebrook Road, Paddys Row, Adey Road, Hampshire Way, Main South Road, the suburb of Seaford Heights, Ostrich Farm Road, Victor Harbor Road, Quarry Road, Barytes Road and a line running continuous of Barytes Road in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Viticulture and orcharding becoming important industries from the 1860s, with the area becoming one of South Australia’s most important wine making regions. Some growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line. The most significant development occurred from the post-war years, with growth in and around the townships of McLaren Flat, McLaren Vale and Willunga from the 1980s. The population of the District increased between 1991 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.

Land use

Hills South District is a predominantly rural area, with small townships at McLaren Flat, McLaren Vale and Willunga. Rural land is used mainly for grazing, farming, orcharding and viticulture.

Major features of the District include Onkaparinga River National Park, numerous wineries and vineyards, McLaren Vale & Districts War Memorial Hospital, McLaren Vale Central Shopping Centre, Willunga Golf Course, Waverley Homestead, historic buildings in the township of Willunga, Ross Roses Rose Garden, Bassett Reserve, Chapmans Reserve, Dawson Reserve, Ellis Park, Gemmel Tassie Reserve, Linear Park, Lions Park, McLaren Flat Recreation Ground, McLaren Vale Oval, Park Hill Sanctuary, Powell Park, Rotary Park, Willunga Recreation Reserve, the Coast to Vines Rail Trail and numerous schools.

Included areas

Hills South District encompasses the suburbs and localities of McLaren Flat, McLaren Vale, Tatachilla, Whites Valley, Willunga and Willunga South, and the City of Onkaparinga parts of the localities of Sellicks Hill and The Range. The remaining parts of the localities of Sellicks Hill and The Range are located in the District Council of Yankalilla area and the Alexandrina Council area respectively.
