Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming, grazing and grape growing. Significant residential development did not occur until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place during the 1960s and 1970s, as Adelaide's suburban growth spread southwards. The population has declined gradually since the early 1990s, a result of few new dwellings being added to the area and a decline in dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Reynella East is a predominantly residential area.
Major features of the area include Malbeck Drive Reserve, Stoneyhill Reserve and one school.
