Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s when the township of Willunga was established. Outlying areas were used mainly for grazing, and later for farming, vineyards and fruit growing. In its early years the town was known for its slate industry, however, in more recent times, viticulture and tourism have become mainstays of the local economy. Some growth took place in the early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line. The township of Willunga has experienced a number of residential subdivisions since the 1980s. The population increased between 1991 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area. The population was relatively stable between 2006 and 2011, a result of some new dwellings being added, but a decline in dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
