Coromandel East - Cherry Gardens - Chandlers Hill - Ironbank is bounded by the Sturt River in the north, the Adelaide Hills Council area in the east, the locality of Dorset Vale, Frith Road, Lafferty Road, the locality of Clarendon, Grants Gully Road, Easton Road, Piggott Range Road and Education Road in the south and Armata Road, the suburb of Happy Valley, Mount Malvern Road, the western edge of Clarendon Lutheran Camp, the suburb of Aberfoyle Park, Main Road, the locality of Coromandel Valley and Driscoll Road in the west.

Name origin

Coromandel East is named for the area east of Coromandel Valley, which is named after the ship Coromandel, which arrived at Holdfast Bay in 1837. Cherry Gardens is named for the abundance of native cherry trees that used to exist in the area. Chandlers Hill is named after Charles Chandler, an early land holder in the area. Ironbank is thought to be named after an early property in the area.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1838, with land used mainly for farming, grazing, timber-cutting, orchards and vineyards. Some growth took place in the late 1800s. The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s. The population increased from the mid 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area.
