Dominant groups
Analysis of the language spoken at home by people aged 65 years or more in Central Coast NSW in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 87.2% of people aged 65 years or more spoke English only, and 5.6% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 60.3% and 33.3% respectively for Greater Sydney.
Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by people aged 65 years or more in Central Coast NSW was Spanish, with 0.6% of the population, or 497 people speaking this language at home.
The major differences between the languages spoken at home for people aged 65 years or more of Central Coast Council area and Greater Sydney in 2021 were:
- A smaller percentage speaking Cantonese at home (0.3% compared to 3.9%)
- A smaller percentage speaking Mandarin at home (0.4% compared to 3.6%)
- A smaller percentage speaking Arabic at home (0.2% compared to 3.2%)
- A smaller percentage speaking Greek at home (0.4% compared to 3.0%)
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people aged 65 years or more who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 618 or 16.6%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 8,119 or 13.8%.
The largest changes in the spoken languages of people aged 65 years or more in Central Coast Council area between 2016 and 2021 were for those speaking:
- Mandarin (+171 persons)
- Spanish (+90 persons)
- Cantonese (+89 persons)
- German (-62 persons)
