Location and boundaries

San Remo - Budgewoi District is bounded by Gosford Road, Wyee Road, the localities of Wyee and Mannering Park, the Pacific Highway, the locality of Doyalson North, Saliena Avenue, Lake Munmorah and the localities of Lake Munmorah and Freeman in the north, the Tasman Sea in the east, Weripi Street, Budgewoi Road, the suburb of Toukley, Budgewoi Lake and Wallarah Creek in the south, and Spring Creek, the Pacific Highway and the railway line in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Population was minimal until the 1930s when the coastal areas became popular as a holiday destination. Significant development occurred from the 1960s, with rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s. The Munmorah Power Station commenced operations in 1967, generating electricity from coal, and was decommissioned in 2012. The Colongra Power Station commenced operations in 2009, operating as a gas fired power station. The population increased substantially during the 1990s as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area and dwelling occupancy rates increased. Growth continued between 2001 and 2011, but at a slower rate, as new dwellings continued to be added to the area.

Land use

San Remo - Budgewoi District includes residential and holiday areas, conservation areas in the east, industrial areas, small commercial areas, and rural areas in the north and north-west. Much of the northern area is used for power generation.
