Location and boundaries

Lake Munmorah - Chain Valley Bay is bounded by the localities of Summerland Point and Gwandalan, Lake Macquarie and Lake Macquarie City in the north, the Tasman Sea in the east, the locality of Budgewoi Peninsula, Lake Munmorah, Saliena Avenue and the locality of Colongra in the south, and the Pacific Highway, the suburb of Mannering Park and Chain Valley Bay in the west.

Name origin

Lake Munmorah is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "stones for grinding seeds".

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1800s, although population was minimal until the 1970s. Rapid development took place during the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in the suburb of Lake Munmorah. Substantial growth continued from the early 1990s, with the population nearly doubling between 1991 and 2011 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area and dwelling occupancy rates increased.
