Location and boundaries

Tuggerah - Mardi is bounded by Yarramalong Road and the Wyong River in the north, Tuggerah Lake in the east, Ourimbah Creek, the railway line, the locality of Kangy Angy, the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway and Old Maitland Road in the south, and the localities of Ourimbah and Wyong Creek in the west.

Name origin

Tuggerah is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "cold" or "where two waters meet". Mardi is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "stone knife".

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1800s. Development of the area dates primarily from the 1980s, spurred by the extension of the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway. Rapid growth took place during the 1990s in the new release areas of Mardi and Tuggerah, with the population trebling between 1991 and 2001. Growth continued between 2001 and 2011, although at a slower rate, a result of fewer new dwellings being added to the area, with most new dwellings being medium density housing.

Land use

Tuggerah - Mardi is a residential, rural, industrial and commercial area. The Mardi area has a number of medium density developments, including Kensington Place and Greenwich Gardens.
