About the profile areas

The 2016 Estimated Resident Population for Peninsula District is 36,799, with a population density of 8.03 persons per hectare.

Location and boundaries

Peninsula District is bounded by Woy Woy Road, the locality of Horsfield Bay, Woy Woy Inlet and Woy Woy Channel in the north, Brisbane Water in the east, Broken Bay in the south, and the localities of Little Wobby and Wondabyne in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1820s when the first land grants were made. The township of Blackwall was established in the 1830s, with boat building, fishing, farming and timber-getting being the main industries. Population was minimal until the late 1800s. Growth took place from the 1880s into the 1920s, aided by the establishment of oyster farming, the construction of the railway line and growth in tourism. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, particularly from the 1960s. The population increased gradually from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium density housing.

Peninsula District includes residential and holiday areas in the north and east, some commercial land use, and rural areas in the south and west.
