Location and boundaries

Gorokan District is bounded by Doyalson Link Road, Spring Creek and Wallarah Creek in the north, Budgewoi Lake in the east, Tuggerah Lake, Saturday Street, Cadonia Road and the locality of Tuggerawong in the south, and the locality of Wadalba, the Pacific Highway, Mataram Road, the suburb of Woongarrah, Arizona Road, Mona Road and the railway line in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1800s, although population was minimal until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place during the 1970s and 1980s. The population continued to increase during the 1990s, largely from the development of the Kanwal new release area. The population fluctuated slightly between 2001 and 2011, due to small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Land use

Gorokan District includes residential areas, some commercial areas, an industrial area, and rural-residential and rural areas in the north, north-west and south-west.

Major features of the area include Lake Haven Centre (shopping centre), the retail area along Wallarah Road, Kanwal Shopping Village, Homemaker Lake Haven, Lake Haven Recreation Centre, Lake Haven Community Health Centre, Gravity Youth Centre, Wyong Rugby League Club, Wallarah Bay Recreation Club, Alfred Greentree Reserve, Arlington Street Park, Charmhaven Park, Craigie Park, Dalnott Reserve, Gorokan Park, Helen Reserve, Hillary Park, Hunter Park, Kanwal Oval, Lake Haven Oval, Mascord Park, Morrie Breen Oval, Rowan Park, Wadalba Sports Complex, Wallarah Point Peace Park, the Toukley Bridge, the Budgewoi Lake foreshore, the Tuggerah Lake foreshore, Charmhaven Sewage Treatment Plant, Charmhaven Industrial Estate, Goobarabah Point, Ocowolrolong Point, Gorokan High School and two other schools.

Included areas

Gorokan District encompasses the suburbs of Charmhaven, Gorokan, Kanwal, Lake Haven and Wyongah.
