Settlement of the area dates from 1824 when the first land grant was made, with land used mainly for timber-getting, orcharding and grazing. The township of Gosford was established in the late 1830s. Ship building was an important industry on Erina Creek from the late 1800s. Some growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line and land subdivision. Significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly from the 1960s. The population continued to increase from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
