Dominant groups
Analysis of the language spoken at home by people aged 55 to 64 years in Central Coast NSW in 2021 compared to New South Wales shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 89.8% of people aged 55 to 64 years spoke English only, and 6.1% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 71.2% and 24.0% respectively for New South Wales.
Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by people aged 55 to 64 years in Central Coast NSW was Mandarin, with 0.7% of the population, or 318 people speaking this language at home.
The major differences between the languages spoken at home for people aged 55 to 64 years of Central Coast Council area and New South Wales in 2021 were:
- A smaller percentage speaking Mandarin at home (0.7% compared to 3.2%)
- A smaller percentage speaking Cantonese at home (0.4% compared to 2.8%)
- A smaller percentage speaking Arabic at home (0.2% compared to 2.4%)
- A smaller percentage speaking Vietnamese at home (0.1% compared to 1.7%)
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people aged 55 to 64 years who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 395 or 17.0%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 2,594 or 6.9%.
The largest change in the spoken languages of people aged 55 to 64 years in Central Coast Council area between 2016 and 2021 was for those speaking:
- Mandarin (+132 persons)
