This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating the Mountains District's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Mountains District in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Managers (407 people or 21.9%)
- Professionals (318 people or 17.1%)
- Technicians and Trades Workers (281 people or 15.1%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 1,006 people in total or 54.2% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, the Toukley District employed 9.3% in Managers; 16.5% in Professionals; and 17.3% in Technicians and Trades Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the Mountains District and the Toukley District were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Managers (21.9% compared to 9.3%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (9.4% compared to 15.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Sales Workers (5.6% compared to 9.4%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (15.1% compared to 17.3%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Mountains District increased by 84 between 2016 and 2021.
There were no major differences in the Mountains District between 2016 and 2021.
