Southern Lakes and The Entrance's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Southern Lakes and The Entrance's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Southern Lakes and The Entrance in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (4,360 people or 18.3%)
- Technicians and Trades Workers (3,841 people or 16.1%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (3,237 people or 13.6%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 11,438 people in total or 48.0% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, Budgewoi Ward employed 13.5% in Professionals; 16.4% in Technicians and Trades Workers; and 14.9% in Community and Personal Service Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Southern Lakes and The Entrance and Budgewoi Ward were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Professionals (18.3% compared to 13.5%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Managers (11.4% compared to 9.5%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (6.1% compared to 8.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Labourers (10.4% compared to 12.3%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Southern Lakes and The Entrance increased by 1,345 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2016 and 2021 in Southern Lakes and The Entrance were for those employed as:
- Professionals (+680 persons)
- Sales Workers (-411 persons)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+408 persons)
- Managers (+385 persons)
