This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Technicians and Trades Workers (3,252 people or 17.1%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (2,848 people or 14.9%)
- Professionals (2,474 people or 13.0%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 8,574 people in total or 45.0% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, the San Remo - Budgewoi District employed 16.3% in Technicians and Trades Workers; 15.3% in Community and Personal Service Workers; and 11.9% in Professionals.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley and the San Remo - Budgewoi District were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Professionals (13.0% compared to 11.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Labourers (12.5% compared to 13.6%)

The number of employed people in Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley increased by 1,165 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2016 and 2021 in Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley were for those employed as:
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+409 persons)
- Professionals (+324 persons)
- Managers (+248 persons)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (+163 persons)
