This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Community and Personal Service Workers (2,155 females or 23.0%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (1,944 females or 20.7%)
- Professionals (1,613 females or 17.2%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 5,712 females in total or 60.8% of the employed female resident population.
In comparison, Tuggerah - Mardi employed 18.6% in Community and Personal Service Workers; 21.1% in Clerical and Administrative Workers; and 21.7% in Professionals.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley and Tuggerah - Mardi were:
- A larger percentage of females employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (23.0% compared to 18.6%)
- A larger percentage of females employed as Sales Workers (14.1% compared to 12.2%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Professionals (17.2% compared to 21.7%)

The number of employed females in Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley increased by 856 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of female residents between 2016 and 2021 in Northern Lakes, San Remo-Budgewoi and Toukley were for those employed as:
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+293 females)
- Managers (+198 females)
- Professionals (+178 females)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (+137 females)
