Southern Lakes and The Entrance's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Southern Lakes and The Entrance's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Southern Lakes and The Entrance in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (2,797 females or 23.6%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (2,483 females or 21.0%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (2,370 females or 20.0%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 7,650 females in total or 64.6% of the employed female resident population.
In comparison, Kariong employed 22.5% in Professionals; 22.6% in Clerical and Administrative Workers; and 16.1% in Community and Personal Service Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Southern Lakes and The Entrance and Kariong were:
- A larger percentage of females employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (20.0% compared to 16.1%)
- A larger percentage of females employed as Professionals (23.6% compared to 22.5%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Sales Workers (12.0% compared to 13.7%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (21.0% compared to 22.6%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed females in Southern Lakes and The Entrance increased by 878 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the occupations of female residents between 2016 and 2021 in Southern Lakes and The Entrance were for those employed as:
- Professionals (+497 females)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (+323 females)
- Sales Workers (-300 females)
- Managers (+231 females)
