The Coastal District's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Coastal District in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (3,252 people or 18.0%)
- Construction (2,106 people or 11.7%)
- Education and Training (1,975 people or 10.9%)
In combination, these three industries employed 7,333 people in total or 40.6% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Toukley - Canton Beach employed 18.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 13.3% in Construction; and 6.2% in Education and Training.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the Coastal District and Toukley - Canton Beach were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in education and training (10.9% compared to 6.2%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (8.4% compared to 4.2%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (4.0% compared to 1.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in retail trade (8.1% compared to 11.2%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Coastal District increased by 3,049 between 2006 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2021 in the Coastal District were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,169 persons)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+510 persons)
- Education and Training (+460 persons)
- Construction (+442 persons)
