In 2021, the largest age group in Mountains was 50 to 54 year olds. The group that changed the most since 1991 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 183 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Mountains in 2021 compared to Central Coast Council area shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 14.2% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 20.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.1% and 22.1% respectively for Central Coast Council area.

The major differences between the age structure of Mountains and Central Coast Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 50 to 54 (9.4% compared to 6.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (8.9% compared to 6.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 55 to 59 (8.6% compared to 6.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 85 and over (1.4% compared to 3.0%)

Emerging groups

From 1991 to 2021, Mountains's population increased by 137 people (3.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.12% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:
