In 2021, the largest age group in Mountains and Valleys was 50 to 54 year olds. The group that changed the most since 1996 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 421 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Mountains and Valleys in 2021 compared to Central Coast Council area shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.6% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 19.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.1% and 22.1% respectively for Central Coast Council area.

The major differences between the age structure of Mountains and Valleys and Central Coast Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 50 to 54 (8.9% compared to 6.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 55 to 59 (8.4% compared to 6.5%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (8.2% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 85 and over (1.2% compared to 3.0%)

Emerging groups

From 1996 to 2021, Mountains and Valleys's population increased by 1,024 people (14.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.54% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+421 persons)
  • 55 to 59 (+313 persons)
  • 70 to 74 (+262 persons)
  • 65 to 69 (+261 persons)
