The levels of full or part-time employment, unemployment and labour force participation indicate the strength of the local economy and social characteristics of the population. Typically, unemployment among youth (under 25) and seniors (over 55) are regarded as important indicators of social cohesion.
The participation rate is another indicator - defined as the percentage of the population in the labour force, it applies to all people over 15, and tends to peak among people in their 30s, while being lower for age groups with a lot of students, retirees, and where one partner has child care responsibilities. The size of Central Coast NSW's labour force aged 80 years or more in 2021 was 274 persons, of which 124 were employed part-time and 58 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status of people aged 80 years or more (as a percentage of the labour force) in Central Coast NSW in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a lower proportion in employment, and a higher proportion unemployed. Overall, 96.7% of the labour force aged 80 years or more was employed (0.0% of the population aged 80 years or more), and 3.3% unemployed (0.0% of the population aged 80 years or more), compared with 97.3% and 2.7% respectively for Greater Sydney.
