Employment statistics are an important indicator of socio-economic status. The levels of full or part-time employment, unemployment and labour force participation indicate the strength of the local economy and social characteristics of the population. Typically, unemployment among youth (under 25) and seniors (over 55) are regarded as important indicators of social cohesion.
The participation rate is another indicator - defined as the percentage of the population in the labour force, it applies to all people over 15, and tends to peak among people in their 30s, while being lower for age groups with a lot of students, retirees, and where one partner has child care responsibilities. A high participation rate may indicate a place people settle to be near employment, while a low one for a particular age group could indicate many retirees or discouraged job seekers.

Dominant groups
The size of Central Coast NSW's labour force aged 55 to 64 years in 2021 was 27,530 persons, of which 9,554 were employed part-time and 14,053 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status of people aged 55 to 64 years (as a percentage of the labour force) in Central Coast NSW in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a similar proportion in employment, as well as a similar proportion unemployed. Overall, 95.8% of the labour force aged 55 to 64 years was employed (0.0% of the population aged 55 to 64 years), and 4.2% unemployed (0.0% of the population aged 55 to 64 years), compared with 95.4% and 4.6% respectively for Greater Sydney.
Analysis of the labour force participation rate of the population aged 55 to 64 years in Central Coast NSW in 2021 shows that there was a similar proportion in the labour force (61.3%) compared with Greater Sydney (61.8%).
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people aged 55 to 64 years employed in Central Coast NSW showed an increase of 2,474 persons and the number unemployed showed a decrease of 187 persons. In the same period, the number of people in the labour force showed an increase of 2,287 persons, or 9.1%.
