In 2021, there were more males working as professionals in the City of Yarra than any other occupation.

The City of Yarra’s occupation statistics quantify the broad occupation group in which people work. The occupation classification is generally arranged in descending order by the level of qualification required to perform that occupation, starting with Managers and Professionals and finishing with Labourers.

Differences between females and males are quite apparent in occupation categories nationwide. Males are more likely to perform jobs involving physical labour such as Technicians and Trades Workers, and Machinery Operators and Drivers, as well as Managerial roles. Females are more often found in Community and Personal Service and Clerical roles. The extent to which the local area differs from this pattern can provide important insights into the changing employment landscape for the sexes.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in City of Yarra in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Professionals (12,565 people or 44.1%)
  • Managers (5,477 people or 19.2%)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (2,742 people or 9.6%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 20,784 people in total or 72.9% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, City of Yarra - Total population employed 45.9% in Professionals; 18.0% in Managers; and 6.4% in Technicians and Trades Workers.

The major differences between the jobs held by males in the City of Yarra and City of Yarra - Total population were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (9.6% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (7.4% compared to 10.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Professionals (44.1% compared to 45.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (6.2% compared to 7.9%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in City of Yarra increased by 3,147 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of males in the City of Yarra between 2016 and 2021 in the City of Yarra were for those employed as:

  • Professionals (+2,167 males)
  • Managers (+768 males)
  • Clerical and Administrative Workers (+206 males)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (+117 males)
