In 2016, 19% of people in the City of Yarra, came from countries where English was not their first language.

Country of Birth data identifies where people were born and is indicative of the level of cultural diversity in the City of Yarra. The mix of Country of Birth groups is also indicative of historical settlement patterns, as source countries for Australia's immigration program have varied significantly over time.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the City of Yarra in 2016 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a smaller proportion of people born overseas, as well as a smaller proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 28.9% of the population was born overseas, and 18.8% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 33.8% and 27.0% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in the City of Yarra was Vietnam, where 3.0% of the population, or 2,619 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the City of Yarra and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in New Zealand (3.1% compared to 1.8%)
  • A larger percentage of people born in Vietnam (3.0% compared to 1.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in India (0.7% compared to 3.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in China (1.8% compared to 3.5%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people born overseas increased by 3,569 or 16.6%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 2,020 or 14.2%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2011 and 2016 were for those born in:

  • United Kingdom (+681 persons)
  • New Zealand (+407 persons)
  • China (+377 persons)
  • United States of America (+238 persons)
