In the City of Yarra, 23% of people spoke a language other than English at home in 2011.

The City of Yarra's language statistics show the proportion of the population who speak a language at home other than English. They indicate how culturally diverse a population is and the degree to which different ethnic groups and nationalities are retaining their language.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the City of Yarra in 2011 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 69.3% of the population spoke English only, and 23.3% spoke a non-English language, compared with 66.4% and 29.0% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the City of Yarra was Vietnamese, with 4.5% of the population, or 3,328 people speaking this language at home.

The major difference between the languages spoken at home for the population of the City of Yarra and Greater Melbourne in 2011 was:

  • A larger percentage speaking Vietnamese at home (4.5% compared to 2.1%)

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2011, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 1,106 or 6.8%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 4,969 or 10.7%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in the City of Yarra between 2006 and 2011 were for those speaking:

  • Greek (-200 persons)
  • Italian (-198 persons)
  • Spanish (+177 persons)
  • Arabic (+154 persons)
