The City of Yarra’s industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Derived from the two Census questions:

'What best describes the business of your employer?' and 'What are the main goods produced or main services provided by your employers business?'

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in City of Yarra in 2016 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (8,767 people or 17.3%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (6,233 people or 12.3%)
  • Education and Training (5,081 people or 10.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 20,081 people in total or 39.5% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Greater Melbourne employed 9.0% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 12.0% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 8.6% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the City of Yarra and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (17.3% compared to 9.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (4.2% compared to 8.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (3.8% compared to 7.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (2.3% compared to 5.0%)

The number of employed people in City of Yarra increased by 7,733 between 2011 and 2016.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2016 in the City of Yarra were for those employed in:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+1,457 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,157 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+992 persons)
  • Education and Training (+896 persons)
