The three largest ancestries in the City of Yarra in 2011 were English, Australian and Irish.

Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in the City of Yarra regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in City of Yarra in 2011 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:

  • English (21,843 people or 29.5%)
  • Australian (18,373 people or 24.8%)
  • Irish (10,581 people or 14.3%)
  • Scottish (7,720 people or 10.4%)
  • Italian (4,379 people or 5.9%)

In combination these five ancestries account for 62,896 responses in total, or 84.89% of all responses.

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in the City of Yarra and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of people with Irish ancestry (14.3% compared to 8.8%)
  • A larger percentage of people with Scottish ancestry (10.4% compared to 7.2%)
  • A larger percentage of people with English ancestry (29.5% compared to 26.9%)
  • A larger percentage of people with Vietnamese ancestry (4.1% compared to 2.0%)
