Need for assistance - Introduction

There were 4,692 people with a need for assistance living in the City of Maroondah in 2011.

People with a disability are an important and sometimes disadvantaged population group often in need of specific services provided by local and state government. Their living arrangements may differ markedly from the rest of the population.

Information was collected in the 2006 and 2011 Censuses about each respondent’s “need for assistance” with either “self-care”, “body movement” or “communication” activities (very young children who obviously require this assistance due only to their age are filtered out of the data).

Unfortunately the data was not considered high enough quality to release information on the three types of assistance separately, so the only information available is whether or not a person needs assistance. It is still possible to look at other characteristics of these people, however, which is provided in this profile.

Derived from the Census questions:

'Does the person ever need someone to help with, or be with them for, self care activities?', 'Does the person ever need someone to help with, or be with them for, body movement activities?', 'Does the person ever need someone to help with, or be with them for, communication activities?', and 'What are the reasons for the need for assistance or supervision shown in questions 20, 21 and 22?' (as per above).
