Ringwood is bounded by Loughnan Road, Warrandyte Road, Wonga Road and Plymouth Road in the north, the eastern boundary of Yarra Valley Grammar School, Mullum Mullum Creek, Grayling Crescent, Maroondah Highway, Hill Street, a line running continuous of Hill Street, Kitson Street, Great Ryrie Street and Reilly Street in the east, Wantirna Road, McKay Court, Wantirna Road, Clarke Drive, the suburb of Heathmont and Dandenong Creek in the south, and Heatherdale Road in the west.
Ringwood is thought to be named after a town in England.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for timber-getting, grazing, farming and orcharding, with some mining and brick-making. Population was minimal until the 1880s. Gradual growth took place into the 1920s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. Expansion continued during the interwar period. Significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. The population generally increased between 1991 and 2011, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Ringwood is an established residential area, with some commercial and industrial areas.
Major features of the area include Eastland Shopping Centre, Maroondah Highway Retail Shopping Strip, Ringwood Square Shopping Centre, Ringwood Public Golf Course (Ringwood Golf), Aquanation, Maroondah Indoor Sports Centre (The Rings), Maroondah Federation Estate, Maroondah Art Gallery, Ringwood Lake, A C Robertson Field, Bedford Park, Greenwood Park, Jubilee Park, Kalinda Modified Urban Forest, Mullum Mullum Reserve, Peter Vergers Reserve, Proclamation Park, Ringwood Lake Park, Ringwood Soccer Ground, Southwood Boys Grammar School, Yarra Valley Grammar School and a number of other schools.
This small area includes the suburb of Ringwood and the City of Maroondah part of the suburb of Vermont.
