In the City of Maroondah, 17% of people spoke a language other than English at home in 2016.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the City of Maroondah in 2016 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 78.8% of the population spoke English only, and 17.0% spoke a non-English language, compared with 62.0% and 32.3% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the City of Maroondah was Mandarin, with 3.3% of the population, or 3,601 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of the City of Maroondah and Greater Melbourne in 2016 were:

  • A smaller percentage speaking Vietnamese at home (0.4% compared to 2.3%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Greek at home (0.6% compared to 2.4%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Italian at home (0.7% compared to 2.3%)

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 5,654 or 43.2%, and the number of people who spoke English only decreased by 754 or 0.9%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in the City of Maroondah between 2011 and 2016 were for those speaking:
