The three largest ancestries in the City of Maroondah in 2016 were English, Australian and Irish.

Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in the City of Maroondah regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in City of Maroondah in 2016 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:

  • Australian (37,481 people or 34.0%)
  • Irish (12,621 people or 11.4%)
  • Scottish (11,345 people or 10.3%)
  • Chinese (6,473 people or 5.9%)

In combination these five ancestries account for 109,244 responses in total, or 98.98% of all responses.

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in the City of Maroondah and Greater Melbourne were:
