Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for timber-getting and farming. Population was minimal until the 1880s. Gradual growth took place from the late 1800s into the 1920s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. Expansion continued during the interwar period. Significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2006, and then increased substantially between 2006 and 2011, a result new dwellings being added to the area, particularly high density housing.
Ringwood Activities Area is a mixed use area, including residential, commercial and industrial land use.
Major features of the area include Eastland Shopping Centre, Maroondah Highway Retail Shopping Strip, Ringwood Square Shopping Centre and Ringwood Arcade.
