Croydon is bounded by Plymouth Road, Yarra Road and the Maroondah Highway in the north, Brushy Creek, Sherlock Road, Newman Road, Lincoln Road, Hull Road, Marion Avenue, Kiloran Avenue, Timms Court, Montgomery Court, West Court, Glen Eagles Court, St Andrews Close and the eastern and southern boundaries of Dorset Public Golf Course in the east, Sellick Drive, Dorset Road and Eastfield Road in the south, and the railway line, Ruthven Way, Angus Avenue, Vasey Concourse, Mt Dandenong Road, Bronhill Road, Maroondah Highway, Grayling Crescent, Mullum Mullum Creek and the eastern boundary of Yarra Valley Grammar School in the west.
Croydon is named after a town (now suburb) near London. It was originally known as White Flats.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for grazing and agriculture. Population was minimal until the late 1860s. Growth took place from the 1880s into the 1920s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. Expansion continued during the interwar period. Significant development occurred from the post-war years, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. The population was relatively stable during the 1980s and early 1990s. The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium density housing.
Croydon is an established residential area, with some industrial and commercial land use.
