Location and boundaries

Heathmont is bounded by Great Ryrie Street, Kitson Street, Campbell Street and Bedford Road in the north, Canterbury Road McCure Court, Tarralla Creek and Bungalook Creek in the east, Dandenong Creek in the south, and Ringwood Public Golf Course, Muir Court, Wantirna Road, McKay Court, Wantirna Road and Reilly Street in the west.

Name origin

Heathmont is thought to be named to describe the area before development; rising land with heath-like vegetation.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming and orcharding. Some growth took place during the 1920s, spurred by the opening of the railway station. Significant development occurred from the post-war years, with rapid growth during the 1950s and 1960s. The population declined slightly during the 1980s and early 1990s. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2011, a result of small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
