Warranwood is bounded by the City of Manningham and the proposed Northern Arterial Road in the north, the suburb of Croydon Hills and Bemboka Road in the east, Plymouth Road and a line running continuous of Plymouth Road in the south, and the City of Manningham in the west.
Warranwood is named for its location on the border of Warrandyte South and Ringwood.

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming and orcharding. Population was minimal until the 1980s. Rapid development took place from the late 1980s into the late 1990s. Growth slowed between 2001 and 2006, with the population being relatively stable between 2006 and 2011, a result of fewer new dwellings being added to the area.
Warranwood is a relatively recent residential area.
Major features of the area include Eden Valley Reserve, Warranwood Reserve, Yanggal Barring Reserve and two schools.
