Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Canterbury in 2021 compared to Georges Hall shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 37.1% of the population used English only, and 56.7% used a non-English language, compared with 43.4% and 47.6% respectively for Georges Hall.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Canterbury was Mandarin, with 8.9% of the population, or 840 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Canterbury and Georges Hall in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (8.9% compared to 1.0%)
  • A larger percentage using Nepali at home (2.9% compared to 0.0%)
  • A larger percentage using Portuguese at home (3.1% compared to 0.2%)
  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (4.2% compared to 23.5%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 1,673 or 45.5%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 1,350 or 62.7%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Canterbury between 2011 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+475 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+285 persons)
  • Spanish (+146 persons)
  • Nepali (+132 persons)
