Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of The Hills Shire in 2016 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 65.3% of the population spoke English only, and 31.9% spoke a non-English language, compared with 58.4% and 35.8% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in The Hills Shire was Mandarin, with 6.4% of the population, or 10,002 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of The Hills Shire and Greater Sydney in 2016 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Mandarin at home (6.4% compared to 4.7%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Arabic at home (1.7% compared to 4.0%)

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 12,718 or 34.0%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 1,523 or 1.5%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in The Hills Shire between 2011 and 2016 were for those speaking:

  • Mandarin (+5,703 persons)
  • Hindi (+1,068 persons)
  • Korean (+695 persons)
  • Persian/Dari (+692 persons)
