Location and boundaries

Castle Hill is bounded by the locality of Glenhaven and Gilbert Road in the north, Old Northern Road, Castle Hill Road and Excelsior Creek in the east, generally by Munro Street, Edward Street, Oxham Avenue, Mileham Avenue, Roxborough Park Road and Blackett Drive in the south, and Windsor Road, Wrights Road and Cattai Creek in the west.

Name origin

Castle Hill is thought to be named after an early property in the area, or for the fine views from the hills in the district.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1801 when a government farm worked by convicts was established. Population was minimal until the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by improvements in access and transport, and the establishment of many orchards. The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly from the 1970s. The population continued to increase from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.

Castle Hill is an established residential area, with some commercial and industrial land use.
