Baulkham Hills is bounded generally by Windsor Road, Blackett Drive, Roxborough Park Road, Mileham Avenue, Oxley Avenue, Old Northern Road, Edward Street and Munro Street in the north, Darling Mills Creek in the east, the Hills (M2) Motorway, Caroline Chisholm Drive, Langdon Road and Gibbon Road in the south, and Old Windsor Road, Seven Hills Road, Chapel Lane and the suburbs of Bella Vista and Kellyville in the west.
Baulkham Hills is thought to be named after Buckholm Hills in Scotland.

Settlement of the area dates from 1794 when the first land grant was made. Land was used mainly for orcharding. Population was minimal until the 1860s. Expansion took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by improvements in transport. The most significant development occurred from the post-war years, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s. The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then increased gradually between 2001 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
Baulkham Hills is an established residential area, with industrial land use in the northern section, and some commercial areas.

This area encompasses The Hills Shire parts of the suburbs of Baulkham Hills, North Rocks and Winston Hills. Most of the suburbs of North Rocks and Winston Hills and a small part of the suburb of Baulkham Hills are located in the City of Parramatta.
