Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in The Hills Shire in 2016 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people born overseas, as well as a smaller proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 35.1% of the population was born overseas, and 27.1% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 36.7% and 29.3% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in The Hills Shire was China, where 5.1% of the population, or 8,067 people, were born.

The major difference between the countries of birth of the population in The Hills Shire and Greater Sydney was:

  • A smaller percentage of people born in Vietnam (0.4% compared to 1.7%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people born overseas increased by 10,426 or 23.3%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 10,132 or 31.2%.
