More Liverpool residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Liverpool's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Liverpool in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,882 people or 18.7%)
  • Retail Trade (1,057 people or 10.5%)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (864 people or 8.6%)

In combination, these three industries employed 3,803 people in total or 37.7% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Liverpool LGA employed 13.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.9% in Retail Trade; and 8.2% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Liverpool and Liverpool LGA were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (18.7% compared to 13.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in administrative and support services (4.6% compared to 3.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (5.4% compared to 7.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (7.1% compared to 8.5%)

The number of employed people in Liverpool increased by 1,590 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Liverpool were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+569 persons)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+245 persons)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+199 persons)
  • Retail Trade (+193 persons)
