Name origin

Heckenberg is thought to be named after William Heckenberg, an early settler in the area.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Significant development did not occur until the 1960s, as part of the Green Valley public housing area. The population declined slightly between 1991 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area and the average number of persons living in each dwelling increased.
