In 2016, 37% of people in Liverpool City, came from countries where English was not their first language.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in Liverpool City in 2016 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people born overseas, as well as a larger proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 40.7% of the population was born overseas, and 37.3% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 36.7% and 29.3% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in Liverpool City was Iraq, where 4.8% of the population, or 9,885 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in Liverpool City and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in Iraq (4.8% compared to 0.8%)
  • A larger percentage of people born in Fiji (3.2% compared to 0.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in China (1.3% compared to 4.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in United Kingdom (1.2% compared to 3.7%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people born overseas increased by 11,604 or 16.2%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 11,596 or 17.9%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2011 and 2016 were for those born in:

  • Iraq (+3,775 persons)
  • Vietnam (+1,422 persons)
  • India (+1,057 persons)
  • China (+748 persons)
