Settlement of the area dates from 1818, with land used mainly for farming. In the late 1920s a soldier settlement scheme was set up, but was unsuccessful due to the Depression. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population and dwelling stock have increased since the early 1990s.
Austral is a rural and township area. The area has remained one of small farms, with the only urban subdivision being in the township of Austral.
Major features of the area include Craik Park, Scott Memorial Park, West Hoxton Shopping Centre, Camp Austral and two schools.
This small area encompasses most of the locality of Austral, with the remaining northern portion located in the Bringelly small area.
