Name origin

Sunshine West is named for the area west of Sunshine, which was named after the Sunshine Harvester Works which dominated the landscape during the early 1900s.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1920s when the Sunshine Heights Estate was developed. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years, with rapid growth from the 1970s through to the 1980s. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2011, a result of small changes in dwelling stock, dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling. Population growth is expected in the future, largely from the redevelopment of the former Sunshine Golf Course at the Callway Park estate.
